Recent years have seen politicians and commentators of all stripes lining up to condemn multiculturalism. This event asks whether we are right to bury state multiculturalism, having once praised it so energetically.
Soon after becoming a Prime Minister, David Cameron criticised “state multiculturalism” in his speach on the causes of terrorism. He argued the UK needed a stronger national identity to prevent people turning to all kinds of extremism.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that attempts to build a multicultural society in Germany have “utterly failed”. She said the so-called “multikulti” concept – where people would “live side-by-side” happily – did not work, and immigrants needed to do more to integrate – including learning German.
French president Nicolas Sarkozy, himself of mixed ethnic and national background also declared that multiculturalism had failed.

Claire Fox is director of the Institute of Ideas.
