Celebrating British Asian Sporting Success

An evening of inspirational talks from British Asian in the world of sports on Wednesday 17th October 2012

2012 has proven to be an amazing year for British sports, with the London Olympics and Paralympics being the pinnacle of such achievements. However, the lack of British Asians within TeamGB was unmistakable during London 2012. The British Asian community is approximately 3.5 million people strong, and whilst there are very few sports personalities from that community in Britain today, there are a handful who have broken through to become recognised as household names.

The City Sikhs Network has teamed up with the newly merged global legal firm Herbert Smith Freehills LLP to present an evening with a number of leading British Asians in the world of sports to discuss the successes, challenges, and inspirations in their lives, as well as considering what can be done to ensure that more young British Asians look to sports as a potential career.

Forming the panel of speakers on the evening are the Paralympian wheelchair rugby player Mandip Sehmi, the former England Women’s cricketer Isa Guha, sports journalist and former BBC Sports editor Mihir Bose, and football agent and co-founder of the Asian Football Awards, Baljit Rihal. There will also be a video message from an iconic Sikh sports personality.

Onkar Singh, a director of the City Sikhs Network and a volunteer during London 2012, said “The theme of the Olympics and Paralympics this year was to ‘Inspire a Generation’. We at CSN hope that this event will do precisely that, that it will encourage young British Asian men and women to pursue a career in sports. Who knows? They may even go on to be the next David Beckham or Jessica Ennis”.

The event will take place on 17th October 2012 from 6pm onwards at Herbert Smith Freehills LLP, Exchange House, Primrose Street, London EC2A 2EG. Please note that it is a ticketed event, with free tickets available.
